Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif recently voiced his strong support for Rishabh Pant as India’s next Test captain, suggesting Pant’s team-first mentality and impressive overseas performances make him a worthy successor to Rohit Sharma. With Rohit, now 37, nearing the twilight of his career and facing criticism after India’s recent Test series whitewash against New Zealand at home, the question of who will take up the mantle looms large.
Despite the recent loss, Rohit remained optimistic in his press conference, shifting focus to the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit is likely to miss the first Test of the series against Australia, set to start on November 22. Jasprit Bumrah, appointed vice-captain for the series, is expected to lead in his absence. However, Kaif sees Pant as a better long-term choice, citing Pant’s selfless approach and adaptability in challenging conditions as key attributes of a successful leader.
“Among the current players, Rishabh Pant stands out as a future Test captain,” Mohammad Kaif remarked during an Instagram live session. “Whenever he’s on the field, Pant puts the Indian team first. No matter where he bats, he’s ready to make a game-changing contribution. He’s delivered in all kinds of conditions—whether in England, Australia, or South Africa, on both seaming and spinning tracks. Rishabh Pant is truly a complete batter.”

Kaif’s endorsement comes in light of Rishabh Pant’s consistent Test performances, particularly abroad, which reflect his resilience and readiness to fight for the team. Pant’s recent half-centuries in both innings of the third Test against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium highlighted his skill under pressure.
While other Indian batters struggled on a spin-friendly pitch, Pant’s aggressive 64 off 57 balls kept India in the hunt until his dismissal, after which New Zealand capitalized and claimed a memorable 25-run victory. Kaif noted how Pant’s mere presence on the field kept the New Zealanders on edge.

“When Rishabh Pant plays his final Test, he’ll retire as a legend,” Mohammad Kaif added. “He’s already shown signs of greatness, with his keeping improving remarkably. Until he was out, New Zealand didn’t breathe easy. So if India is looking for a future leader, Rishabh Pant has what it takes to succeed Rohit Sharma, particularly in the Test format.” Kaif’s advocacy for Pant reflects a growing sentiment that the young wicketkeeper-batter may be India’s best choice for future Test leadership.
