With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in full swing, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh reminisced about his battles against Australia during his playing days. Speaking on Star Sports’ special talk show “Time-out,” Harbhajan reflected on the intensity and significance of taking on one of cricket’s most formidable teams, sharing both on-field memories and behind-the-scenes anecdotes. For Harbhajan, Australia was not just another opponent; they represented the pinnacle of excellence in cricket.
Facing them was a litmus test for any player aspiring to prove their mettle at the highest level. “Playing against Australia was our job, but it was also a challenge. They were the number one team, and if you wanted to measure your capabilities, you had to face the best. That’s what we did—tried and stayed determined. Whenever we played against Australia, it demanded something extra, an effort beyond the ordinary,” Harbhajan Singh explained.
The legendary off-spinner highlighted the unique determination required to compete against Australia’s top-ranked team. Their dominance on the field demanded complete commitment and elevated performances from every Indian player.

Yet, Harbhajan also acknowledged the camaraderie that developed off the field, particularly after his retirement. Memories of heated on-field rivalries have softened with time. Harbhajan now shares a friendly bond with many Australian players, including Matthew Hayden.
“Today, when I meet Matthew Hayden, it feels like meeting a long-lost brother. We work together in broadcasting, for the same production house, Star Sports. Those fiery memories are confined to the field. The Indian Premier League has also played a big role in bridging these gaps, as sharing dressing rooms helps players understand each other better,” Harbhajan Singh noted.
The IPL’s influence in fostering connections across nationalities has been profound. Harbhajan learned that Australian players, like their Indian counterparts, are driven by the same passion and dedication to make their country proud.
Reflecting on the competitive spirit, Harbhajan Singh shared a valuable insight: “On the field, everything is fair—just like in love and war. Fiery looks and fierce battles are part of the game, but they should remain on the field. Off the field, it’s about mutual respect and understanding,” he concluded.
