Glenn Maxwell, the star all-rounder for Australia, recently expressed his interest in being part of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. While Maxwell played in a Sheffield Shield match against Queensland earlier this year, he hasn’t featured in many red-ball games since then. This lack of experience in longer formats has led former international cricketer David Warner to express doubts about Maxwell’s inclusion in the Test squad.
David Warner emphasized that Maxwell’s limited red-ball cricket experience makes it challenging for him to earn a spot in the Test team. He pointed out that if Maxwell had participated in more Sheffield Shield matches, he might have been in the conversation for selection.

However, with little to show in terms of recent performances, David Warner believes Maxwell doesn’t deserve a place in the squad at this time. He stressed the importance of hard work and commitment to red-ball cricket to make it to the Test level, rather than simply making himself available.
David Warner further explained, “If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to really want to play four-day cricket. Unless he’s playing all the club cricket and showing he wants to play Test cricket, he doesn’t deserve that opportunity.” He also added, “It’s not just about saying, ‘I want to play,’ you have to show you’re willing to grind it out.”

Maxwell, who has played seven Test matches in his career, has scored 339 runs at an average of 26.07. His last Test appearance was back in 2017 against Bangladesh. In addition to Maxwell, Australian spinner Adam Zampa has also expressed his desire to play in the Sri Lanka series. Both Maxwell and Warner are set to feature in the upcoming Big Bash League, starting December 31.
