Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s ongoing fitness concerns cast doubt on his availability for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Australia. Despite hopes of a strong comeback, Shami’s recent performances and lingering issues have led the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to hesitate in clearing him for international duty until he regains full fitness.
Shami’s return to competitive cricket in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 ended on a disappointing note as Bengal was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Baroda. Struggling to find his rhythm, Shami conceded 43 runs in his four overs during the match. His economy rate has been a concern throughout the tournament, exceeding 10 runs per over on three occasions.
Although he picked up 11 wickets in nine matches with an economy of 7.85, Shami hasn’t displayed the sharpness that once made him India’s strike bowler. The veteran last represented India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final and was expected to bolster the Indian attack for the BGT.

However, a limited Ranji Trophy stint and a shift to T20 cricket hindered his recovery. Bengal has now named him in their squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which overlaps with the latter stages of the Australia series, signalling a focus on domestic cricket for his rehabilitation.

The NCA’s cautious approach aims to have Shami ready for the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025. With extended domestic spells to regain form and fitness, Shami remains a vital cog for India’s 50-over plans.
As India continues their Australian tour without Shami, the spotlight remains on Jasprit Bumrah. The ace pacer leads the wicket charts but faces his own fitness challenges. India, led by Rohit Sharma, will look to bounce back in the third Test at the Gabba starting December 14, aiming to regain momentum in the tightly contested series.
