India’s Test skipper Rohit Sharma continues to face scrutiny as his lacklustre form in red-ball cricket has left fans disappointed and critics questioning his future in the format. Amid these concerns, former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has hinted that Rohit might consider retirement from Test cricket if his struggles persist through the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The third Test at Gabba concluded in a draw, providing an opportunity for senior Indian batters to regain their form ahead of the crucial Melbourne Test. However, the Indian top order has been underwhelming throughout the series, and Rohit Sharma’s performances have been particularly concerning. The 37-year-old has managed scores of just 3, 6, and 10 in his last three innings, fueling speculations about his place in the side.

Sunil Gavaskar, a revered voice in cricket, shared his perspective on Rohit’s lean patch during an interaction with ABC Sport. He suggested that the Indian skipper might take the tough call of stepping away from Test cricket if he fails to deliver in the remaining matches.

“I believe Rohit will definitely get a chance to play the next couple of matches. However, if he doesn’t score runs, I think he might decide to retire from Tests himself. He’s a conscientious cricketer who cares deeply for Indian cricket and would not want to be a liability to the team,” Sunil Gavaskar remarked.

The final two matches of the series—the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the Sydney Test starting January 3—will be crucial for Rohit. Gavaskar emphasized that these games present an opportunity for the Indian captain to turn his fortunes around.

Rohit’s struggles extend beyond this series, with a dismal record in his last 13 Test innings, where he has accumulated only 152 runs at an average of 11.83. Despite his remarkable achievements in white-ball cricket, including leading India to T20 World Cup glory in 2024, his red-ball credentials are now under the spotlight.
