Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar once shared a fascinating story about how a waiter helped him improve his game by suggesting a redesign of his elbow guard. The incident took place in 2001 at the Taj Coromandel Hotel in Chennai. Tendulkar, along with his teammates, was staying there when he ordered a coffee to his room.
The waiter who delivered it seized the opportunity to discuss cricket with the iconic batsman. Given Tendulkar’s passion for the game, he welcomed the conversation.
The waiter, a devoted fan, shared a keen observation: “Whenever I’ve seen you wear an arm guard, your bat swing changes. I’ve watched your batting closely, rewinding footage several times. I noticed that wearing the elbow guard alters your natural flow.” This candid feedback took Tendulkar by surprise. He admitted, “You are the only person in the world who figured that out. I knew something felt off, but I hadn’t addressed it.”

This revelation stuck with Tendulkar. He later realized that his elbow guard’s padding was inadequate and was affecting his performance. “I got hit a few times and noticed the discomfort. That’s when I decided to redesign it. I added proper fiber and cushioning to ensure the guard absorbed the impact without compromising my bat swing,” Tendulkar explained during the launch of his sports equipment range, Sachin by Spartan, in 2017.

The story, shared in an interview, resurfaced in 2019 when Tendulkar posted a clip on X (formerly Twitter). Recently, a fan page rekindled interest by resharing it on Instagram, captioning, “When Sachin Tendulkar redesigned his elbow guard over a waiter’s suggestion.”
