Ravichandran Ashwin’s unexpected decision to retire from international cricket has raised eyebrows across the cricketing world. According to his father, Ravichandran, Ashwin’s announcement might have been fueled by feelings of constant humiliation despite his illustrious career. In an exclusive interview with CNN News18, Ravichandran expressed mixed emotions about his son’s sudden retirement, stating he was both proud and disheartened.

“I only found out at the last moment,” Ravichandran shared. “What was going on in his mind, I don’t know. He just announced it, and I accepted it with pleasure. But one part of me feels he should have continued.”

While Ravichandran refrained from detailing the exact reasons, he hinted that Ashwin’s frustration over inconsistent selections in the playing XI might have played a role. “It’s his wish, his decision, and I cannot interfere in that. But maybe, it was humiliation. He has been sidelined despite his performances,” he speculated.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, revealed on Wednesday that Ashwin had been contemplating retirement for a while. Rohit had reportedly persuaded him to postpone the decision until after the pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide.

For Ashwin’s family, the retirement announcement brought a mix of shock and understanding. “We were emotional. He gave 14-15 years to the game. Retirement was shocking, but we saw it coming. The constant humiliation—how long could he tolerate it?” Ravichandran said, adding, “It was his decision, and he probably reached a breaking point.”

Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket are monumental, with 765 wickets across formats, making him the country’s second-most successful Test bowler. Despite his remarkable record, his career has been marred by periods of exclusion from the playing XI, which may have weighed heavily on him.

Reflecting on his son’s journey, Ravichandran admitted his role was limited to providing encouragement and logistical support. “I used to take him to practice on my bike. At home, I encouraged him to balance studies and cricket. But Ashwin’s brilliance and hard work made him who he is. I didn’t have to do much; he managed everything on his own,” he said.

Ashwin leaves behind a legacy of brilliance and resilience, but his retirement underscores the challenges even the most accomplished players face in their careers.
