The Australian cricket team has introduced several changes to its squad for the fourth and fifth Tests against India, scheduled in Melbourne and Sydney. Among the notable alterations, opening batter Nathan McSweeney has been dropped, despite being considered a potential long-term replacement for retired stalwart David Warner. The 19-year-old Sam Konstas, who impressed with a stellar century in the Prime Minister’s XI practice game against India in Canberra, has been called up in his place.
Konstas’ selection reflects the selectors’ faith in his potential to bring a fresh dynamic to the batting lineup. The squad changes extend beyond the batting department. Star pacer Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the series’ remainder due to an injury sustained during the Brisbane Test, which also sidelined him for the final two days of that match.
To compensate, Cricket Australia has added Sean Abbott, Jhye Richardson, and Beau Webster to the squad for the concluding matches, ensuring depth and flexibility in the pace department. Cricket Australia’s Chairman of Selectors, George Bailey, emphasized the importance of these adjustments.

“The squad provides options for structuring the XI for the final two Tests. Sam earns his maiden call-up, bringing a unique style of batting, and we’re eager to see his development,” George Bailey noted in an official statement. Bailey also expressed confidence in McSweeney’s long-term potential despite the decision to drop him. “Nathan has shown the ability and temperament to succeed at Test level. It was a tough call, but given the challenges at the top order throughout this series, we wanted to explore alternative options for the next matches.”
As for Hazlewood’s replacement, George Bailey highlighted the strong competition between Scott Boland and Jhye Richardson for the vacant fast-bowling spot. “Jhye offers a valuable option in the absence of Josh Hazlewood. His successful return to domestic cricket this summer has been promising,” Bailey added.
