Indian skipper Rohit Sharma shed light on including Mumbai spin all-rounder Tanush Kotian in the Indian squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kuldeep Yadav’s recovery from hernia surgery and Axar Patel’s absence following the birth of his child left India seeking additional spin options.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s recent retirement at the end of the third Test further emphasized the need for reinforcement. Tanush Kotian, a 26-year-old off-spinner, earned his spot after a standout Ranji Trophy season, where he scored 502 runs and claimed 29 wickets in 10 matches, playing a pivotal role in Mumbai’s title-winning campaign.
Known for his quicker bowling style, effective use of height, and ability to generate bounce, Kotian is also a reliable batter, making him a versatile asset. Speaking at a press conference at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Rohit explained the decision with a touch of humour.

“Tanush was here a month back. Kuldeep doesn’t have a visa, and we needed someone who could arrive quickly,” he quipped before clarifying, “It’s just a joke. Tanush is a proven performer in domestic cricket, and we wanted a solid backup option in case we need two spinners for Melbourne or Sydney.”
Rohit emphasized that Kuldeep’s recovery is ongoing, making him unavailable, while Axar is currently unable to travel. “Tanush has demonstrated his capabilities at the domestic level and was instrumental in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy victory last year. He’s an excellent all-rounder, and having him ensures we’ve got all bases covered if required,” he added.

India has historically utilized two spinners effectively at the MCG and Sydney Cricket Ground, the venues for the final two Tests. While Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja remain the first-choice spin options, Kotian’s inclusion offers flexibility and depth.
As India looks to regain control in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kotian’s addition highlights the team’s strategic approach to adapting to evolving circumstances and ensuring readiness for any conditions.
