Talismanic India batter Virat Kohli has candidly acknowledged the lack of discipline in his recent innings during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following a stellar unbeaten century at Perth, Kohli’s subsequent scores of 7, 11, and 3 have left him unsatisfied. As India and Australia head into the Boxing Day Test at 1-1, Kohli sat down with former India head coach Ravi Shastri to reflect on his performances and the challenges of Test cricket.

“If you would have told us we’d be 1-all heading into the Boxing Day Test, we would have taken it with both hands,” Virat Kohli admitted. “I agree the last two or three innings haven’t gone the way I wanted. I haven’t been disciplined enough to stick in there and grind it out. That’s the challenge Test cricket brings.”

The Indian batting maestro noted how the livelier pitches in Australia compared to his previous tours demand a different approach.

“These pitches are much more lively than last time, so there’s a different strategy required. But I take pride in countering different conditions and stepping up when the team needs me.” Virat Kohli emphasized the importance of adapting, adding, “The idea is to get stuck in, get your eyes set, and respect the conditions. Once you do that, you can start playing your game.”

Discussing the immense expectations placed on him, Virat Kohli reflected on his mindset. “Expectations will always be there, whether it’s playing for your country or having performed consistently over the years,” he said. “But it’s important to focus on your plans and the space you’re in. If you dwell on expectations, you drift from what you need to do.” He highlighted the importance of situational awareness. “If I walk in early, it’s about stabilizing the innings. If there’s a partnership, it’s about capitalizing on it. The focus should always be on what the team needs from you.”

With India having won Test matches at the MCG in both 2018/19 and 2020/21, Kohli acknowledged the team’s rich history at the iconic venue.

“We’ve played some great cricket here. Last time, we won and went up 2-1 in the series. This Test is a great opportunity for both teams to bring their A-game. It’s going to be a cracker.” Kohli also spoke fondly of the MCG, where he has amassed 316 runs in three Tests at an average of 52.66.

“This is a special place. From my first tour here, I’ve understood the occasion the Boxing Day Test brings. I’ve had some good memories—whether it was the hundred in 2014-15 or the win in 2018. It’s always a privilege to play at the MCG.” With the series finely poised, Kohli reiterated the team’s determination. “The draw in Brisbane showed our character, and it gives us another chance to start afresh here. We’re ready to make it count.”
