India’s current Test squad is facing mounting pressure, especially as players like Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head have found their rhythm, often rediscovering their best form against the Indian bowlers. However, India’s selection decisions for the Boxing Day Test have come under scrutiny. Jasprit Bumrah, tasked with leading the attack, found himself bearing much of the responsibility as Australia posted a commanding 474 runs in their first innings.

India hoped for a response from the batting order on a pitch that seemed favourable for runs, but things quickly went awry. Rohit Sharma, returning to the opening position, fell early for just 3 runs, while Lokesh Rahul could only manage 24 before being sent back by a brilliant delivery from Australian skipper Pat Cummins.

Despite this, young Yashasvi Jaiswal rose to the occasion, showing his mettle against the Australian attack. His solid 82-run innings, which included 11 fours and a six, was a glimpse of promise, equaling the feats of cricketing legends before him. The first day of the Boxing Day Test saw debutant Sam Constance, just 19, frustrating India’s bowlers with his clever shot selection. His reverse sweeps off Bumrah were particularly impressive.

His solid contribution, along with Usman Khawaja’s 57, helped Australia set a strong foundation. Marnus Labuschagne added 72, and Steve Smith’s outstanding 140 runs from 197 balls further bolstered Australia’s total, with valuable contributions from the lower order, including Alex Carey (31) and Pat Cummins (49).

India’s bowling attack did take wickets, with Bumrah claiming four, Ravindra Jadeja three, and Akash Deep two, but Australia’s strong total proved difficult to chase. The Indian response began shakily, with Rohit and Rahul dismissed cheaply. However, Jaiswal and Virat Kohli steadied the ship with a 100-run partnership for the third wicket. Unfortunately, a miscommunication between the two led to Jaiswal’s run-out. Kohli, too, followed soon after for 36. India now stands at 158 for 4 after 44 overs. While Jaiswal’s knock was impressive, his mix-up with Kohli was costly.
