Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently reiterated his strong stance against farewell matches, stating that he has no desire to linger in the game solely for ceremonial reasons. Reflecting on his decision to retire midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin acknowledged that while he believed he could have represented India longer, he preferred to step away on his own terms. His surprise announcement after the third Test in Brisbane caught fans and cricketing pundits off guard, as he opted not to stay with the team for the remainder of the series.

The cricketing fraternity, including legends like Kapil Dev, voiced their opinion that Ashwin deserved a farewell Test to honor his illustrious career. However, Ashwin remains steadfast in his belief that the integrity of team selection should never be compromised for sentiment.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin said, “I want to play more cricket. Where is the place? Obviously not in the Indian dressing room, but somewhere else. I want to be honest with the game. Imagine being selected for a farewell Test when you don’t deserve it. I don’t want that. I’d rather leave when people ask ‘why’ than when they ask ‘why not.’”

Ashwin’s career in Test cricket is nothing short of remarkable. With 106 Tests to his name, he finished as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, amassing 537 scalps. His last appearance came in the pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide. Despite his contributions, Ashwin found himself out of favour during the series opener in Perth, where Washington Sundar was picked. He played in Adelaide but was sidelined again for the third Test in Brisbane, replaced by Ravindra Jadeja.

“I’ve learned that not everything in cricket or life goes as planned,” Ravichandran Ashwin said, reflecting on his career. “You might wish things could be different, but I have no regrets. I’ve cherished every moment, learned from failures, and celebrated successes. The game has always been about joy for me, and as long as I feel that joy, I’ll keep playing.”

Ashwin also questioned the need for farewell matches, saying, “What difference does it make if I come out and people applaud? In a week, it’s forgotten. The game has given me so much, and I’ve played it with happiness. That’s what matters.”

Though he retired from international cricket, Ashwin remains active in the IPL. Recently re-signed by Chennai Super Kings for ₹9.75 crore, he returns to his home team after nearly a decade. Ashwin expressed excitement about playing for CSK again, stating he hopes to contribute as long as possible.
