The BCCI is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the availability of its premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The star pacer is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for a back injury he sustained during the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. To facilitate his fast recovery, a special three-member team has been assigned to keep a close check on him.

Bumrah’s absence has been a huge loss for Team India, as he is the mainstay of the bowling attack. The 31-year-old last played in January before being sidelined due to a stress reaction in his back. Considering his recurring back injuries, the BCCI is treading carefully, balancing caution with urgency as the Champions Trophy looms.
According to sources, Jasprit Bumrah has recently completed the five-week offloading phase in which he was advised to complete rest, including a temporary halt on gym workouts. He is now in the rehabilitation phase where a dedicated team is overseeing his recovery.

“Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach Rajnikanth Sivagnanam and physio Thulasi Ram Yuvraj are handling Bumrah’s rehab under the personal supervision of Dr. Nitin Patel, Head of Sports Science. The national team’s S&C coach Soham Desai and physio Kamlesh Jain are also being updated regularly,” a BCCI official told News18.

The CoE follows a structured recovery plan involving a strength-and-conditioning expert, a physiotherapist, and a specialized coach focusing on skill-based rehabilitation. While Desai remains with the Indian squad for the ongoing home series against England, fast-bowling coach Troy Cooley is expected to take charge once Bumrah resumes bowling.
A final medical report on Bumrah’s fitness will be submitted by Dr. Patel to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma will also be kept in the loop before a final call is made. With the February 11 deadline for squad submission fast approaching, Bumrah’s fitness is the top priority.

If he is unsure for the opening matches, India could include a replacement, with Harshit Rana being in the front of the queue. But if selectors feel he might recover for the later stages, he might be included and his late replacement can be approved by ICC if needed. India will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. They will play a high-pressure match against Pakistan on February 23 and against New Zealand on March 2.
