Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action following the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka. The left-arm spinner, who played a crucial role in Australia’s 2-0 series victory by taking 16 wickets, now faces the possibility of suspension if his action exceeds the permitted 15-degree elbow flexion limit.

Kuhnemann is set to undergo biomechanical testing to assess if his bowling action adheres to ICC regulations. If found illegal, he will be prohibited from bowling in international cricket until he adjusts his action and passes reassessment. Nonetheless, he can still bowl in domestic cricket, including for Tasmania.

His reporting comes as a significant development, considering his impressive performances. Kuhnemann finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series, surpassing even Nathan Lyon. His standout moment came in Indore during the 2023 Test series against India, where he picked up a six-wicket haul, including a five-for in the first innings.

Under ICC rules, bowlers are allowed a natural degree of elbow extension, but any straightening beyond 15 degrees is considered illegal. Cricket Australia (CA) has stepped in to support Kuhnemann, highlighting that this is the first time his action has been questioned in his eight-year professional career.

“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral after the second Test in Galle. Matt has played 124 professional matches across formats, including five Tests and four ODIs, and has never had his action reported before. Cricket Australia will work with the ICC and independent experts to ensure he gets through this process smoothly,” CA stated.

With Australia’s next Test assignment scheduled for June in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, the team has time to assess Kuhnemann’s situation. The Australian camp remains optimistic that their in-form spinner will successfully clear testing and return to international cricket without any issues.
