Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s dismissal in the final over left Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans heartbroken during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. With CSK needing 20 runs off the last over, Dhoni’s presence at the crease had ignited hopes of a trademark finish, but a stunning catch by Shimron Hetmyer off Sandeep Sharma’s delivery ended those dreams.

The crucial moment came on the first ball of the 20th over when Sandeep executed a perfect yorker outside off. Dhoni, attempting to muscle it away, failed to get the elevation and sent the ball straight to deep mid-wicket, where Hetmyer dived forward to complete a brilliant low catch.

The stadium cameras captured the agony of a disappointed MSD fan, whose reaction quickly went viral on social media. CSK’s chase had been anchored by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who played a composed 44-ball 63, keeping the team in the hunt.

However, Wanindu Hasaranga’s spell of 4/35 dismantled the middle order, ensuring CSK never gained full control of the chase. Despite late fireworks from Ravindra Jadeja (32* off 22) and Dhoni (16 off 11), the Men in Yellow fell short by six runs, suffering their second consecutive defeat in IPL 2025.

The penultimate over had raised CSK’s hopes, with Ravichandra Jadeja and MS Dhoni smashing 19 runs off Tushar Deshpande, including a towering six from the veteran wicketkeeper. But Sandeep Sharma held his nerves in the final over, giving away only 13 runs and sealing the win for RR.

Earlier in the match, Nitish Rana’s explosive 81 off 36 deliveries, featuring 10 fours and five sixes, propelled RR to a strong total of 182/9. However, disciplined bowling from Matheesha Pathirana, Noor Ahmad, and Khaleel Ahmed, who claimed two wickets each, prevented RR from crossing the 200-run mark.
