Jasprit Bumrah’s much-anticipated return to competitive cricket has been put on hold as the BCCI continues to take a cautious approach with the star pacer. Reports suggest that Bumrah is at risk of a stress fracture in his lower back, an issue that has plagued him in the past. The injury, which first surfaced during the Sydney Test in January, has kept him out of action ever since.

Currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, Bumrah has resumed bowling but is yet to operate at full intensity. While initial expectations pointed towards his return to Mumbai Indians by April 1, the latest update indicates there’s no fixed timeline for his comeback.

“Bumrah’s injury is more serious than expected,” a BCCI source told The Times of India. “The medical team is taking extra precautions to prevent a stress fracture. Even Bumrah himself is treading carefully.”

Although he is deemed clinically fit, the BCCI is focusing on gradually increasing his workload to ensure a smooth and sustainable recovery. This delay is a significant blow for Mumbai Indians, who are already struggling in IPL 2025. After starting their campaign with two consecutive losses, MI bounced back with a commanding win over Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Bumrah’s absence leaves a big void in their bowling attack.

Meanwhile, another pacer, Akash Deep, is also recovering from a back injury. His return, initially expected by early April, is now pushed back to April 10.

Former New Zealand speedster Shane Bond recently warned India against overusing Bumrah, pointing out that his workload during the Australia series was dangerously high. “He bowled too much in a short span. He doesn’t have a fracture yet, but he is on the borderline,” Bond told ESPNCricinfo.

With the T20 World Cup later this year, India will be hoping their ace fast bowler makes a full recovery without any setbacks.
