Former India wicketkeeper and current RCB mentor Dinesh Karthik has stirred the pot with comments that seem to be a veiled jab at his former captain MS Dhoni. While reflecting on his own decision to retire from professional cricket, Karthik spoke about the importance of stepping away from the game at the right time—before it begins to outgrow a player.

Though he never named MS Dhoni directly, the undertone of his words appeared to question players who continue playing despite waning form and fitness, hinting at those who may be holding on too long for the spotlight.
In the latest episode of the RCB podcast, Karthik shared his thought process: “I knew I couldn’t represent the country anymore. My training wasn’t what it used to be, and I wasn’t able to give the same intensity. That’s when I felt it was time. I’ve always believed you should leave the sport when people ask ‘Why not?’ instead of ‘Why?’” His candid statement gave insight into how self-awareness helped him make peace with retirement.

What raised eyebrows was Karthik’s pointed remark on the respect one receives in cricket. He explained, “People get respect because of the position they hold. But the real challenge begins when you start believing the world owes you something because of your past. The moment you forget your place in the larger ecosystem and think you’re indispensable, that’s where the trouble starts.”

While Karthik’s comments were meant as a broader reflection on knowing when to quit, many took it as a commentary on Dhoni, who at 43 is still turning out for Chennai Super Kings, albeit with limited batting appearances and visible fitness challenges. The legendary CSK captain has not yet hinted at retirement, despite CSK’s underwhelming start in IPL 2025.
RCB, meanwhile, have found their rhythm under new leadership. After a thrilling 12-run win over Mumbai Indians at Wankhede, they’re now placed third on the points table and will take on Delhi Capitals next on April 10, followed by Rajasthan Royals on April 13.

In contrast, Dhoni’s CSK is languishing at ninth place with just one win in four matches, leaving fans and critics alike wondering how long the stalwart will keep donning the yellow jersey amid growing pressure and dipping team form.
