Former England batter Mark Ramprakash has heaped praise on Shubman Gill, lauding the young Indian captain’s extraordinary hunger, endurance, and classical technique, which he believes is steering world cricket into a new era. After watching Gill’s masterclass at Edgbaston—where he scored 269 and 161 to seal a memorable win for India—Ramprakash suggested that Gill is primed to step into the shoes of the departing ‘Fab Four’ of modern cricket: Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson.

Writing for The Guardian, Mark Ramprakash noted, “We must acknowledge his stamina, his skill, and above all, his hunger—not just for scoring runs but for leading by example as a young captain.” Gill’s series tally now stands at 585 runs in just two Tests, following up his 147 in the first match at Headingley.

Ramprakash emphasized that far from being weighed down by the burden of leadership, Gill appears to be thriving. “Captaincy can sometimes be detrimental to a player’s form. But in Gill’s case, it seems to have sharpened his focus. His three highest Test scores have come in the last three weeks.”

The 25-year-old became only the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score a double century and a hundred in the same Test. Additionally, he became the first Indian—and Asian—captain to notch up a double century in a Test in England, leading India to a massive 336-run win to level the five-match series 1-1.

Reflecting on Gill’s impact, Mark Ramprakash wrote, “Just two games into the series, we’ve seen something truly special. His performance in the second Test was one of those rare instances where a single individual dominated the game and defined its outcome.”

He added that it was Gill’s unrelenting presence at the crease that broke England’s spirit. “By the time England came out to bat, they were mentally and physically drained. Their footwork, decision-making—everything looked off. And that fatigue came from Gill’s refusal to let up.”

India’s bowlers capitalized on that pressure, reducing England to 25/3 late on Day 2—a moment Ramprakash believes turned the match decisively. With the third Test set to begin at Lord’s on July 10, Gill’s leadership and form remain India’s biggest weapons.
