Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar has praised Shubman Gill’s leadership and batting prowess, lauding the young captain for proving doubters wrong in the ongoing Test series against England. With stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli unavailable, many questioned how a relatively inexperienced Indian side would cope.

However, under Gill’s command, the team has risen to the occasion and currently sits with the series level at 1-1 after a massive 336-run win at Edgbaston. Gill, who is just 25, has been the backbone of India’s batting lineup, amassing a staggering 585 runs across four innings — including three centuries, with a top score of 269.

His performances have not only steadied India but also sparked discussions about the possibility of him challenging Don Bradman’s historic record of 974 runs in a single series.

“He’s done brilliantly, both as a captain and a batter,” Dilip Vengsarkar told reporters in Mumbai. “Scoring runs at the top gives you the authority to lead from the front, and that’s exactly what Shubman has done. He’s shown maturity beyond his years in English conditions, which are never easy, especially in the absence of senior players like Rohit and Virat.”

Dilip Vengsarkar acknowledged the hype around Gill potentially chasing Bradman’s record but emphasized the importance of keeping the focus on team success.

“Of course, he’s in superb form, and I hope he goes on to break the record. He certainly has the ability. But I always believe it’s not about personal milestones — we often get too obsessed with those. The key is to win matches for the country.”

Despite lacking experience, Gill’s team has shown resilience, not just competing but dominating crucial sessions across the first two Tests. With three more matches to go, Vengsarkar believes Gill and his men have what it takes to make history on English soil.
