India’s pace ace Jasprit Bumrah delivered a moment of pure magic at Lord’s on Day 1 of the third Test against England, clean bowling the world’s No. 1 Test batter, Harry Brook, with a delivery that could well be the ball of the match. In what was billed as a battle between the top-ranked Test batter and the top-ranked Test bowler, Bumrah came out emphatically on top.

The England white-ball skipper and newly crowned No. 1 in the ICC Test Batting Rankings, Harry Brook, had looked in good touch during the series so far, with scores of 99, 0, 158, and 23 across his four previous innings. His consistency, coupled with Joe Root’s dip in form, propelled him past his senior teammate in the rankings.

But on Thursday, the Lord’s crowd witnessed a classic Jasprit Bumrah special in the 55th over. Charging in with trademark rhythm, Bumrah delivered a 140 kmph nip-backer that started outside off and jagged in sharply off the seam. Brook, shaping to punch into the offside, misread the movement entirely. The ball beat the inside edge and cannoned into the stumps, sending off and middle cartwheeling.

Harry Brook could only stare in disbelief before trudging back to the pavilion, dismissed for 11 off 20 balls, including two boundaries. The scalp was a big moment for India, breaking a promising partnership and underlining Bumrah’s status as a generational fast bowling talent.

This wicket also added to Bumrah’s growing legend in overseas conditions. Earlier in the series, he became the first Asian bowler to take 150 Test wickets in SENA countries, and on Thursday, he reminded the cricketing world exactly why he holds the No. 1 spot in the Test bowling rankings.
