Earlier this month, the CBI had taken Hyderabad Cricket Association president A. Jagan Mohan Rao and four of its top officials into custody on charges of document forgery and embezzlement of large amounts of money. The Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) has then requested the CID to dig deeper into the investigation, seeking criminal prosecution of the accused, including Rao, other members of the apex council, MLC K. Kavitha, MLA KTR, and former HCA director Vanka Pratap, for corruption in team selection and financial malpractices in the last decade.

The TCA, in its letter, further noted that the BCCI had invested approximately ₹500–600 crore in the HCA over ten years. There is, however, little proof of large-scale infrastructure spending or asset purchase for the association. They allege backroom influence by KTR and K. Kavitha since the formation of Telangana, claiming they have commanded a series of HCA decisions.
CID probe uncovered scandalous financial irregularities. HCA is said to have cornered over ₹2.3 crore through inflated bills, avoiding tender procedures, and backdoor deals. The FIR uncovered extravagant spending on cricket balls, air conditioners, and plumbing, with ₹1.03 crore reportedly spent on 1,340 balls alone.

Additionally, Rao allegedly created fake membership certificates of the Sri Chakra Cricket Club (previously known as the Gowlipura Cricket Club) by forging the signature of the club president, C. Krishna Yadav. G. Kavitha and C. Rajendra Yadav were co-conspirators, and that facilitated Rao’s takeover of the post of HCA president by fraudulent means.

CID also charged Rao, treasurer C. J. Srinivas Rao, and CEO Sunil Kante with threatening Sunrisers Hyderabad officials for free passes and VIP entry for IPL 2024–25. Now, a Malkajgiri court has awarded six-day CID custody to the trio for questioning. This scandal has prompted demands for radical administrative restructuring, even from ex-India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, who called for the HCA to be wound up.

The TCA believes that the future growth of cricket in Hyderabad depends on the eradication of this toxic culture of administration. With probes ongoing, Telangana cricket fans look to the answers—and hope the aftermath brings accountability, transparency, and new governance that nurtures the game and its talent back home.
