It’s been a poignant tour for India as they play their first Test series in England since 2014 without the presence of Virat Kohli, the player many consider the heartbeat of the team. Kohli retired from Test cricket just before the series, closing a chapter that saw him amass 9,230 runs at 46.9 across 123 matches, including 30 centuries. His absence is being felt in dressing rooms and hearts alike.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who shared many journeys with Kohli—right from the U-19 days—paid a heartfelt tribute in an interview with The Times of India. He said, “All good things come to an end, and the way he’s been able to make those decisions that feel comfortable to him… it’s been incredible going out on his terms.”

Kane Williamson emphasised that while retirement marks a close, the value of shared moments and friendships formed off the pitch are what resonate most. The retirement triggered rumours suggesting that Kohli’s departure was board-driven.

However, BCCI vice‑president Rajeev Shukla dismissed such claims, stating unequivocally, “Rohit and Virat made the decision to retire on their own. It is the policy of BCCI that we never tell any player when to retire.”

Virat Kohli bid farewell after his final Test in Australia during the 2024–25 Border‑Gavaskar series, which ended in a loss despite his unbeaten hundred. With Australia securing a 3–1 series verdict, Kohli quietly exited the format. Many speculated whether he could have given one last push in England, but ultimately, he chose to play on his terms.

As India sets up for the remaining Tests under captain Shubman Gill, Kohli’s Test absence leaves a void both in runs and leadership. But Williamson’s words—that Kohli retired with dignity and peace—underscore an extraordinary innings: one of intensity, integrity, and quiet departure.
