The Indian sipper Shubman Gill found himself at the centre of controversy and criticism during the fourth Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. As the Test match unfolded at Old Trafford, Manchester, Gill was greeted with loud boos from the English crowd — a reaction stemming from his recent clash with England’s openers.
The tension brewed during the third Test at Lord’s, where Gill had lashed out at Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett for what he called deliberate time-wasting tactics. According to the young Indian captain, the English pair arrived 90 seconds late to the crease, a delay he deemed “outside the spirit of the game.” His remarks at the pre-match press conference did not sit well with England’s camp or their passionate fans.

As expected, when Gill walked out to bat in the 41st over following Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal by Liam Dawson, the atmosphere turned hostile. The boos rang loud, echoing the home supporters’ resentment. Despite the pressure, Gill started confidently, showcasing his class with a few elegant strokes.
However, his stay at the crease was short-lived. In the 50th over, Ben Stokes produced a peach of a delivery that angled in sharply and struck Gill on the pads. The Indian captain offered no shot, and though umpire Rod Tucker hesitated, he eventually raised the finger. Stokes, fired up, celebrated with an aggressive roar right in front of Gill.

Shubman Gill, unconvinced, opted for the DRS, but the decision stood. He had to make the long walk back, scoring just 12 off 23 deliveries — a fiery battle that summed up the tension and drama between the two sides in what has become a fiercely contested series.
