Rishabh Pant’s return to red-ball cricket has been one of the most followed comeback stories this year, but Day 1 of the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford brought an unexpected twist. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter, looking fluent on 37 off 48 balls, was forced to retire hurt after sustaining an injury during a rather uncharacteristic reverse sweep attempt.

The incident took place in the 69th over when Pant tried to reverse sweep Chris Woakes. The delivery didn’t bounce as much as expected, and the ball took an inside edge before smashing into Pant’s front boot. He immediately grimaced in pain and called for medical attention.

The physio rushed in, but the treatment seemed to require more time than acceptable within the playing window, prompting the umpires to suggest that Pant continue treatment off the field. As a result, he was helped off the ground, visibly uncomfortable, and eventually stretchered out of the boundary ropes.

Replacing him at the crease was Ravindra Jadeja, as the Indian innings, already building nicely after early blows, faced a sudden moment of anxiety. Pant had looked assured during his stay, countering the overcast Manchester conditions confidently and playing some typically aggressive strokes. His absence could become crucial if the injury turns out to be more serious.

As per ICC Playing Conditions, Pant remains eligible to return to bat later in the innings. Section 25.4 clearly allows a player to resume his innings after retiring due to injury or illness, provided it is either at the fall of a wicket or if another batter retires hurt. For Indian fans and team management, that clause offers hope.
Given India’s position in this crucial fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Pant’s potential return could be a defining moment later in the match.
