In a moment that delighted fans and brought an unexpected tech twist to cricket, Google CEO Sundar Pichai joined the commentary box during Day 3 of the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval. Known for his deep love of cricket, Pichai took a brief break from his executive duties to step into the world of live sports commentary, sharing stories, memories, and a genuine passion for the game alongside the legendary Harsha Bhogle.

As India maintained a strong grip on the match, Sundar Pichai reflected on his early cricketing inspirations. “I ran into Sunil Gavaskar at the stadium,” he said fondly. “I had a poster of him in my room while growing up.” The Google chief also shared his admiration for Sachin Tendulkar, revealing that he used to be so nervous while watching him bat that he could barely sit through the innings.

Despite the demands of running one of the world’s largest tech companies, Pichai remains a dedicated follower of the sport. “I still manage to catch highlights,” he said. “I listen to you on Cricbuzz and follow commentary on YouTube.” His cricket fandom, however, runs much deeper than casual viewership.

He recalled the first cricket match he ever saw live—India’s iconic tied Test against Australia in Chennai in 1986. “I was there on the final day,” he said. “To have witnessed one of only two tied Tests in history was surreal. That day got me hooked to the sport forever.”
When asked about the current India-England series, Pichai praised the competitiveness. “What a series it’s been,” he said. “I’d put my money on 2-2, but I think India will take this one.”

In a lighter moment, as Washington Sundar was batting during his commentary stint, Pichai quipped about a running joke at Google. “After Sundar’s heroics in Australia in 2021, folks at Google Australia started calling me ‘California Sundar’ just to differentiate us.”
Pichai handled the commentary like a seasoned pro. When Bhogle noted how he instinctively paused during deliveries, Pichai smiled, replying, “Well, I’m sitting next to the best in the business.” It was a seamless blend of cricket, tech, and storytelling—one that fans won’t forget soon.
