Oval Invincibles’ star all-rounder Rashid Khan experienced one of the most topsy-turvy outings of his career in Tuesday’s The Hundred clash against Birmingham Phoenix. Known for his precision and economy, Rashid endured a rare off day with the ball, conceding 59 runs off just 20 deliveries without taking a wicket — the most expensive spell in both The Hundred’s history and his T20 career (The Hundred counts as T20 in stats).

Yet, in true Rashid fashion, he still found ways to leave his mark with the bat and in the field. Batting first, the Afghan ace smashed 16 runs from just nine balls, including two towering sixes. One of them was his signature ‘Snake Shot’ — a stroke he innovated to counter full-length deliveries.

On the 90th ball, Tim Southee attempted a wide yorker, but Rashid shuffled across, crouched low, and swatted it horizontally over deep square leg for a 56-metre maximum — a moment that had the crowd gasping.

Rashid Khan has previously explained the shot’s name: “When a snake bites, it springs back. For this shot, I can’t complete the follow-through because of my body position. It’s all in the wrists, so I’ve worked hard to strengthen them,” he revealed during IPL 2022.

In the field, his athleticism shone again. While defending 181, Rashid sprinted from deep cover to intercept a sliced drive from Joe Clarke. Sliding forward at full pace, he managed to get his hands cleanly under the ball — a catch that underlined his value beyond bowling.

Unfortunately for the Invincibles, Rashid’s struggles with length and pace allowed Liam Livingstone to capitalise, hammering an unbeaten 69 off 27 balls, including 26 runs from just five balls against the spinner. While the night ended in defeat, Rashid’s all-round brilliance — even on an off day — reaffirmed why he remains one of cricket’s most compelling match-winners.
