Taking to social media on Tuesday, August 12, O’Brien posted a heartfelt video message where he acknowledged the significant role of the Indian community in Ireland. The former all-rounder, who retired from international cricket in 2022, expressed his sadness and reiterated that such incidents do not define the values of his country.

“The recent racist and hateful acts against Indians in Ireland deeply sadden me. These attacks do not represent who we are as a people. India and its people hold a very special place in my heart,” Kevin O’Brien said in his statement on X (formerly Twitter).

He further assured the Indian community that Ireland remains their home and their contribution to Irish society is both immense and deeply appreciated. “Your efforts and presence make Ireland stronger. We value everything you do,” he added.

The Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi shared O’Brien’s video, praising his solidarity and underlining that the bond between the two nations remains firm despite the actions of a small minority. Their post read: “A special message from Irish cricketer Kevin O’Brien. The bond between our countries will remain unshaken by the actions of a few.”

The remarks come at a sensitive time, following a spate of racist attacks targeting Indians in certain parts of Ireland. Addressing the issue, the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi released a statement condemning the violence in the strongest possible terms.

“The Embassy is deeply shocked and saddened by the recent violent attacks against Indian citizens in Ireland. These acts are an assault on the values of equality and human dignity that Ireland holds dear,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its stance, the Embassy made it clear that racism and xenophobia have no place in Irish society. “The actions of a few do not reflect the spirit of the Irish people, and such behavior will not be tolerated,” it concluded.
