Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially addressed the controversy surrounding Dewald Brevis’ mid-season signing after Ravichandran Ashwin’s recent explosive claim sparked debate across the cricketing fraternity. Ashwin had suggested that CSK were forced to pay Brevis a higher sum than the official fee when he joined the squad midway through the IPL 2025 as a replacement for injured seamer Gurjapneet Singh.

According to reports, Brevis was signed at a league fee of INR 2.2 crore. However, Ashwin’s remarks hinted at the possibility of a top-up payment based on the youngster’s demand. Reacting swiftly, CSK issued a strong clarification, denying any irregularities and asserting that the entire process followed the IPL’s strict player regulations.

“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,” read the official CSK statement.

As per IPL Player Regulations (2025–27), clause 6.6 clearly states that a replacement player cannot be paid more than the cricketer he replaces. Moreover, the fee is adjusted for mid-season signings depending on the number of matches already played before the replacement comes on board. This ensures transparency and prevents any unfair advantage for franchises.

Interestingly, Brevis turned out to be one of CSK’s few shining lights in an otherwise disappointing campaign. The young South African, often dubbed “Baby AB” for his 360-degree stroke play, made an immediate impact by scoring 225 runs in six innings at an impressive strike rate of 180. His contributions included two match-winning fifties — a blistering 57 off 23 balls against Gujarat Titans and a commanding 52 off 25 against Kolkata Knight Riders. He also earned a Player of the Match award for his heroics against GT, showcasing why CSK invested in him despite a mid-season shuffle.

While CSK endured their worst-ever finish in IPL history, ending last on the points table in 2025, Brevis’ performances provided a glimpse of hope for the franchise. Going into the next season, the Yellow Army will be banking on the youngster’s fearless batting to script a much-needed revival.
