In a shocking turn of events that left the cricket fraternity bewildered, Indian legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli mysteriously disappeared from the ICC ODI Batting Rankings last week. Just days earlier, Rohit was comfortably sitting at No. 2, while Kohli held the No. 4 spot, continuing their dominance as two of the finest ODI batters of the modern era.

The update on August 20, 2025, however, showed neither of them in the Top 100, sending social media into a frenzy. Fans and experts speculated whether this was a technical glitch or an intentional move, particularly since discussions about the duo’s future in ODIs have been ongoing after they retired from Tests and T20Is.
For over a decade, Rohit and Kohli have been the backbone of India’s one-day batting unit. Their partnership has delivered countless match-winning moments, with both men playing pivotal roles in India’s ICC tournament successes. Hence, their sudden omission triggered widespread concern.

Thankfully, the International Cricket Council (ICC) quickly issued a clarification, confirming that the anomaly was nothing more than a technical error. “There was an error in our rankings tables today, but it has been rectified,” an ICC spokesperson told Hindustan Times.
The corrected rankings brought relief to Indian fans. Rohit Sharma reclaimed his No. 2 position with 756 points, while Shubman Gill retained the No. 1 spot with 784 points. Kohli also returned to No. 4 with 736 points, reaffirming his consistency. Other notable names include Pakistan’s Babar Azam at No. 3 (751 points), India’s Shreyas Iyer at No. 6 (704 points), and New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, rounding off the Top 5 with 720 points.

Both Rohit and Kohli last played ODIs in February 2025 during the ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE, where India lifted the coveted crown after a decade-long wait. Their contributions were vital in securing the title, further cementing their legacies.
Looking ahead, the duo will return in October for India’s white-ball tour of Australia. Reports suggest that the three-match ODI series could serve as Rohit Sharma’s farewell, should he choose to announce retirement after the tour. Kohli, however, appears set to continue, with the selectors backing his form and fitness. If his performances remain strong, he is expected to feature in the 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Statistically, the pair stand among the greatest ever. Kohli boasts 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs, including 51 centuries and 74 fifties, while Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs, with 32 centuries and 58 fifties. While Kohli has already won an ODI World Cup, Rohit will be eager to cap his glittering career with a 50-over ICC trophy.
