The iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, fondly known as Chepauk, is currently undergoing a major facelift ahead of a busy cricketing calendar. With the 2025/26 domestic season just weeks away and the stadium set to host matches in the 2026 T20 World Cup—co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka—the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has rolled out extensive renovation plans to restore the historic venue to world-class standards.

In a video shared by TNCA, the entire outfield, except the central pitch, has been dug up. Reports confirm that the old outfield is being replaced with a brand-new one while a state-of-the-art drainage system is being installed. This upgrade aims to minimize rain delays, ensuring faster resumption of play and a better experience for players and fans alike.

While the upgrades promise top-quality cricket at one of India’s oldest Test venues, there remains uncertainty over its readiness for the Ranji Trophy season starting October 15. Last year, Tamil Nadu played all their home matches in Coimbatore, as Chepauk remained unavailable. Fans are eager to see Sai Kishore’s men return to their traditional home ground, especially after their quarter-final exit against Vidarbha in 2024-25.

Chepauk’s legacy runs deep in Indian cricket. Established in 1916, it is the country’s second-oldest stadium and has earned a reputation for its spin-friendly conditions, particularly in Test cricket. Its most recent international match was the second T20I between India and England earlier this year, where Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 72 guided India to a thrilling two-wicket win.

The venue is also the fortress of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, though 2025 was an exception. For the first time in history, CSK finished at the bottom of the table, securing just four wins in 14 games. Even Chepauk failed to inspire the Men in Yellow, who managed only one victory out of six home fixtures—a stark contrast to their usual dominance.

With renovations in full swing, the upcoming months will be crucial. Whether it’s hosting Ranji Trophy matches, IPL 2026, or the T20 World Cup, the refurbished Chepauk aims to reclaim its status as one of cricket’s most iconic theatres.
