The Indian government has made its stance clear on the long-debated issue of sporting ties with Pakistan, issuing a detailed statement that differentiates between bilateral and multinational events. While India has reiterated its refusal to resume bilateral cricket with Pakistan, it has confirmed participation in international tournaments where both nations are involved.

The timing of this statement is significant, as it comes just days before the much-discussed Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin in the UAE on September 9. India, despite being the official host, was compelled by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to stage the tournament in a neutral venue. Moreover, as part of the broadcaster’s demand, a high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash was slotted into the schedule, sparking widespread reactions.

Many Indian cricket fans expressed anger, citing the sacrifices made during Operation Sindoor and recalling the lives lost in the Pahalgam attack. Critics argued that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prioritised financial gains over national sentiment by agreeing to Pakistan’s participation. Political voices, too, joined the debate, questioning the BCCI’s commitment.

However, the government’s latest guidelines have lent official backing to the board’s decision, while maintaining its no-bilateral stance. According to the statement, India will not participate in any sporting contests held in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be permitted to tour India for bilateral fixtures.

At the same time, multilateral tournaments such as World Cups, Asia Cups, and ICC events will continue to feature contests between the two nations, following international sports practices and safeguarding the interests of Indian athletes. The government also stressed its commitment to positioning India as a global hub for sports.

To this end, visa procedures for athletes, officials, and technical staff from participating nations will be streamlined. This step is expected to make India an attractive destination for future multinational events. For international sports governing bodies, office-bearers will be granted priority multi-entry visas, valid for the duration of their tenure, up to five years.

Additionally, full diplomatic courtesies will be extended to leaders of these bodies during their visits. This move highlights India’s nuanced approach to balancing sports diplomacy with national policy.

While the door remains firmly closed on bilateral cricket with Pakistan, the country is keen to embrace the global sporting framework and strengthen its image as a reliable and welcoming host. For cricket lovers, this means the India-Pakistan rivalry will remain alive on neutral and multinational platforms, even if bilateral series stay suspended indefinitely.
