Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag recently opened up about a defining moment with coach Greg Chappell that tested his resolve, showing that even fearless players are not immune to criticism. Speaking on The Life Savers Show, Sehwag revealed how Chappell’s blunt words once stung during a challenging phase in his career.

Greg Chappell told him, “If you don’t move your feet, you won’t score runs.” Virender Sehwag, confident in his abilities, reminded the coach of his record — over 6,000 runs at an average above 50. Chappell remained unmoved, dismissing him with a curt, “Doesn’t matter,” which led to a heated exchange that required then-captain Rahul Dravid to step in.
The pressure intensified when Chappell warned him just before an innings, “Make sure you score, or I’ll drop you.” Instead of being rattled, Sehwag used it as motivation. Walking out to bat, he scored 184 by the end of the second session, silencing critics and proving his mettle.

Later, he jokingly told Rahul Dravid, “Tell your coach not to come near me,” showing both his irritation and strong-minded resolve.

Sehwag’s fearless attitude defined his illustrious career. In Tests, he scored 8,586 runs in 104 matches at an average of 49.34, including 23 centuries and two historic triple hundreds. In ODIs, he amassed 8,273 runs in 251 games, with 15 centuries, including a then-record 219 against the West Indies in 2011.

Beyond stats, Sehwag played pivotal roles in India’s triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, often providing explosive starts that set the tone for victories. This story with Chappell exemplifies how criticism, even from coaches, fueled his relentless pursuit of excellence, cementing his legacy as one of India’s most destructive and fearless openers.
