India batter Rinku Singh has admitted that his selection in the Asia Cup 2025 squad came as a surprise to him. Speaking to RevSportz during the UP T20 League, the southpaw revealed that he was doubtful about cutting enduring a lean patch in both international and domestic cricket. However, the selectors’ faith in him seems to have reignited his spark.

Just days after being named in the Indian squad, Rinku roared back to form with his maiden T20 century, guiding his team, Meerut Mavericks, to a thrilling chase of 168 runs. Walking in under pressure, with Meerut tottering at 41 for 4 inside the first eight overs, Rinku produced a match-winning masterclass, reminding everyone of his ability to turn games on their head.

“I got motivated after I saw my name on the Asia Cup list. Last year wasn’t great for me, and I genuinely felt I might be left out. But the selectors trusted me, and that gave me confidence. This UP T20 League innings has boosted my morale, and I’ll carry that confidence into the Asia Cup,” Rinku Singh said.

Interestingly, Rinku Singh hinted that his ability to bowl an over or two may have worked in his favour. With the current selection panel valuing multi-dimensional players, the left-hander believes his occasional bowling adds weight to his case.

“Bowling has become very important today. Selectors prefer players who can contribute in multiple ways. If not with the bat, then at least with the ball,” he explained.

The Kolkata Knight Riders star also opened up about his batting role. Often labelled as a specialist finisher, Rinku acknowledged that being known for his exploits in the death overs might have typecast him. While he enjoys the challenge, he insisted that he can adapt higher up the order if required.

“In 2023, I batted at No. 5. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable batting at No. 7 or 8, but if the team needs me there, I will deliver. I’ve played 33 T20Is and scored three fifties, so I know I can bat anywhere, not just as a finisher,” he said.

His most recent knock — a breathtaking 108 off 48 balls — perfectly illustrated his fearless style. Featuring seven fours and eight towering sixes, the innings reached a peak when he hammered five sixes off his last six deliveries, dismantling Abdul Rehman and Vasu Vats in the 18th and 19th overs.

For Rinku Singh, this maiden T20 ton couldn’t have come at a better time. With questions surrounding his form and place in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, the innings was not just a statement, but a reminder of his match-winning pedigree.
