Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey recently hailed the brilliance of MS Dhoni, calling him a “genius” while recalling one of the most unforgettable wicketkeeping moments in modern cricket. Carey reflected on an incident from the second T20I of India’s 2016 white-ball tour of Australia, where Dhoni’s sharpness behind the stumps stunned both players and fans alike.

The moment came when James Faulkner faced Ravindra Jadeja. A thick inside edge ricocheted off Dhoni’s pads before crashing into the stumps. While many thought it was accidental, Carey insisted it was intentional. “Dhoni, he’s a genius, so he probably meant it. Big chop on from Faulkner, hit the pad, deflected back onto the stumps. I think we’ve got a stumping,” Carey told cricket.com.au.

That match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground highlighted Dhoni’s unmatched instincts. Apart from Faulkner’s wicket, Dhoni played a hand in dismissing Aaron Finch via a run-out, stumping Glenn Maxwell, and catching Chris Lynn. With the bat, he chipped in with 14 off 9 balls. India eventually defended 185, winning by 27 runs.

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 59 (33) earned him Player of the Match, while Rohit Sharma top-scored with 60 off 47. The bowling unit was led by Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, both returning figures of 2/37.

Dhoni’s wicketkeeping genius has long been admired globally. During IPL 2025, Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed that Dhoni barely practised wicketkeeping but still performed flawlessly.

Similarly, Alyssa Healy once admitted she would rather seek tips from Dhoni than from the legendary Adam Gilchrist. For many, he remains not just India’s most excellent wicketkeeper, but also one of the sharpest minds the game has ever seen
