Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has returned to the nets after missing North Zone’s opening Duleep Trophy clash due to a viral flu. The young skipper, who the BCCI also summoned for a precautionary fitness check, is preparing himself for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, where he will be India’s vice-captain and a vital cog in the top order.

For long, many wondered whether India’s batting would lose its strength once Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepped aside from being the primary pillars. Yet, Gill’s emergence as a consistent match-winner has ensured smooth continuity. His leadership qualities and ability to score runs under pressure have made him the natural successor in India’s batting hierarchy.

Gill’s most commanding performance came during the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, where he not only made his captaincy debut in Tests but also ended as the highest run-getter. He amassed 754 runs at an incredible average of 75.4, proving his ability to anchor as well as accelerate in crunch moments.

Following that exhausting series, Gill took a short break in his hometown, Chandigarh. Despite being named captain of the North Zone Duleep Trophy squad, he had to withdraw from the first match against East Zone due to illness. In his absence, deputy Ankit Kumar took over the captaincy responsibilities.

Initially, his health scare raised concerns among Indian fans, especially with the Asia Cup around the corner. However, recent updates and visuals from training sessions have reassured supporters.

Shubman Gill has resumed batting practice at local facilities and will soon head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for routine assessments. His medical reports have come back clear, and the final fitness check is expected to be a formality before joining the Asia Cup squad in Dubai. India begins its Asia Cup campaign on September 10 against UAE, before facing traditional rivals Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19 in Group A.

While Gill’s immediate focus will be on guiding India to success in the continental event, he is also set to lead the Test team once again in the much-anticipated home series against West Indies starting October 2. Gill’s quick recovery and return to training is a significant boost for India, as his presence at the top of the order has become indispensable in shaping the team’s new era.
