Rahul Dravid has stepped down as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, bringing an end to his significant association with the franchise. Dravid, who has represented the Royals both as a player and a coach, will not hold any further position with the team.

In an official statement released on August 30, Rajasthan Royals confirmed Rahul Dravid’s departure, stating, “Head Coach Rahul Dravid will conclude his tenure with the franchise ahead of IPL 2026.”

The franchise further expressed its gratitude, acknowledging Dravid’s pivotal role in shaping the team’s culture and leadership. The statement also revealed that while Rahul Dravid was offered a broader role within the franchise during a structural review, he opted not to accept it.

Dravid’s journey with the Royals dates back to his time as a mentor in 2014 and 2015, followed by his appointment as head coach for the 2025 IPL season. After serving as India’s head coach until the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid took over the reins at Rajasthan Royals, where his leadership and influence left a lasting impact.

 

The former Karnataka batter has a rich history with the Royals, having captained the team from 2011 to 2013. In his playing career with Rajasthan, he appeared in 46 IPL matches, accumulating 1,276 runs at an average of 29.00, with seven half-centuries to his name.

Under his captaincy, the Royals made it to the finals of the 2013 Champions League T20. With Rahul Dravid’s departure, the franchise will need to decide on a new head coach ahead of the mini-auction for IPL 2026, which is fast approaching.
