South African batting sensation Dewald Brevis continues to make headlines, not just for his explosive batting but also for the constant comparisons to legendary cricketer AB de Villiers. Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his similar stroke play, Brevis has embraced the label, calling it a privilege rather than a burden.

Brevis has been in red-hot T20 form this year, smashing 995 runs in 30 innings at an outstanding average of 43.26 and a blazing strike rate of 186.32. His tally includes six half-centuries and a remarkable unbeaten 125, underlining his ability to dominate world-class attacks.

Reflecting on his breakout moment at the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, Dewald Brevis recalled, “A friend of mine held up a board saying ‘Baby AB’ when I scored 50 against India. I’ve always idolised AB, learned a lot from him, and I see the comparison as something very special,” he shared on De Villiers’ YouTube channel.

Brevis was the standout performer of the 2021-22 U19 World Cup, amassing 506 runs in six games at an average of 84.33. His run spree included two centuries and three fifties, with a top score of 138.
This year’s IPL saw Brevis provide a rare spark for the Chennai Super Kings in a tough season. Signed as a replacement for Gurjanpreet Singh, he delivered 225 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 180. Before joining CSK, Brevis played two seasons for the Mumbai Indians, who had invested ₹3 crore in him after his stellar U19 exploits.

Currently part of South Africa’s white-ball tour of England, Brevis showed his T20 prowess again, topping the charts with 180 runs in three matches at an average of 90. His record-breaking 125* now stands as the highest T20I score by a South African.
