Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Kiran More has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to sources, the BCCI has approached a few high-profile former cricketers from the West Zone, including a player from Saurashtra, but More has quickly become the unanimous choice of the majority of state associations.

This development comes after Roger Binny stepped down on July 19, having reached the mandatory age limit of 70 for board office-bearers. Since then, vice-president Rajeev Shukla has been handling the day-to-day responsibilities at the top.

Adding to the intrigue, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the BCCI elections, initially planned for September 28, may not take place this year. Instead, if all stakeholders reach an agreement, the next president could be appointed unopposed, a move that would reflect a rare consensus within Indian cricket’s power corridors.

“Kiran More’s name has strong backing. Almost all state associations are aligned, and it seems the board is keen to see him at the helm. A formal announcement could come soon,” sources told NDTV.

Born in 1962, More represented India between 1984 and 1993, featuring in 49 Tests and 94 ODIs. He was part of India’s Asia Cup-winning squads in 1988 and 1991.

Beyond his playing days, More carved out a strong career in administration and coaching. He previously served as Chairman of Selectors at the BCCI, worked as a wicketkeeping consultant with the Mumbai Indians, and in 2019 took over as Director of Cricket and interim coach of USA Cricket, where he played a pivotal role in restructuring pathways after the team earned ODI status.

Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Cricket Advisory Committee of the Baroda Cricket Association. If appointed, More’s rise would mark the return of a former player to Indian cricket’s top administrative seat. With India preparing to host several marquee global tournaments, including the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, his cricketing insight and administrative experience could prove invaluable at this decisive stage for the sport in the country.
