Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has shared crucial advice for Team India as they prepare for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025. With convincing wins against the UAE and Pakistan, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side has already sealed progression, leaving their clash with Oman in Abu Dhabi on Friday as a dead rubber.

Gavaskar suggested India should prioritise workload management for spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, recommending he be rested not only against Oman but also in the first Super Four clash against Pakistan. The legendary opener believes Bumrah must be preserved for the “bigger match” — the Asia Cup final scheduled for September 28.

“I believe Jasprit Bumrah should be rested, perhaps even for the Pakistan game, so he’s available for the final,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Sony Sports Network. “That’s what India should look at. Of course, a bench player will need to step in, but Bumrah should definitely be left out to stay fresh.”

The 31-year-old pacer has bowled just seven overs across India’s two outings so far, yet concerns around his workload remain at the forefront of India’s campaign strategy.

Beyond bowling, Sunil Gavaskar also suggested adjustments to the batting order. With India barely tested so far — chasing down UAE’s 58 in just 5 overs and Pakistan’s 128 in under 16 overs — the top order hasn’t had much time in the middle. Gavaskar feels skipper Suryakumar Yadav should drop down the order, giving youngsters Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson valuable opportunities.

“I’d like to see India bat first, keeping the same openers. Then, Suryakumar could demote himself, letting Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson face more deliveries,” Sunil Gavaskar suggested.
