Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi has revealed the high-stakes drama that unfolded behind the scenes during the Asia Cup 2025, following the controversial handshake incident involving India. Sethi disclosed that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had, in a moment of frustration, considered withdrawing Pakistan from the tournament. Despite being advised by friends to stay out of the matter, Sethi intervened, prioritising the greater interests of Pakistan cricket.

In an interview with Samaa TV, Najam Sethi explained, “In the heat of the moment, Mohsin Naqvi had decided to withdraw from the Asia Cup. My friends told me, ‘Don’t go, don’t help them.’ I wasn’t even planning to help Naqvi. I went to help the Pakistan Cricket Board.”

He further highlighted the potential fallout had Naqvi’s decision gone ahead. “If what he was attempting had succeeded, Pakistan would have suffered irreparable damage. We could have faced sanctions from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), penalties from the ICC, foreign players might have refused to participate in the PSL, and we stood to lose $15 million in ACC broadcasting rights,” Najam Sethi added.

Najam Sethi emphasised that his intervention was driven by concern for the integrity and stability of Pakistan cricket.
“This wasn’t about individuals. This was about the integrity of Pakistan cricket. Had Pakistan withdrawn, it could have led to long-term diplomatic and financial fallout,” he noted.

Sethi’s revelations offer a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes efforts to manage the crisis and protect Pakistan cricket from potentially severe consequences.
