Legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar praised Tilak Varma after India’s dominant six-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash. Gavaskar, in his column for The Sportstar, cheekily remarked that Tilak treated Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi like a “net-ball spinner.”

Writing in his column for The Sportstar, Gavaskar remarked, “In the end, another super-talented batter, Tilak Varma, treated Pakistan’s premier bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, like a net-ball spinner and smashed him around to wrap a win with deliveries to spare.”
India chased down Pakistan’s 172-run target in just 18.5 overs at the Dubai International Stadium, maintaining their aggressive momentum. The opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill laid the foundation with a 105-run partnership off 59 balls. Sharma scored 74 off 39 balls, while Gill contributed 47 off 28, dismantling Pakistan’s pace attack with authority.

Tilak Varma provided the finishing touch, remaining unbeaten on 30 from 19 balls. He smashed two fours and two sixes, including a towering six followed by a boundary off Afridi to seal the match in style.

For Shaheen Afridi, it was a night to forget as he conceded 40 runs in 3.5 overs without taking a wicket. Fellow bowlers Saim Ayub (0/35 in 3 overs) and Abrar Ahmed (1/42 in 4 overs) also struggled against India’s firepower.

With this victory, India extended their unbeaten streak in the Asia Cup. After topping Group A with wins over UAE, Pakistan, and Oman, the Suryakumar Yadav-led team has carried that momentum into the Super 4 stage. Another strong performance will confirm their place in the final.
India now faces Bangladesh on Wednesday, September 24, in Dubai, with expectations high for the in-form batting lineup to continue their aggressive displays.
