India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has strongly defended the tactical decision of using Jasprit Bumrah more frequently in the powerplay overs during the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. Traditionally, Bumrah has been India’s banker in T20 cricket, operating with one over upfront before returning in the middle and closing overs. However, the strategy has seen a shift in this tournament, with the pacer often bowling two overs early and leaving just one for the death.

The move sparked debate, with former cricketer Mohammed Kaif questioning whether India was using Bumrah’s skills effectively. Kaif argued that holding him back for crunch moments could be more beneficial. But Morkel sees things differently, emphasising the value of an early breakthrough.

Speaking after India’s dramatic Super Over win against Sri Lanka, Morkel explained that the team management views the powerplay as the most impactful phase to unleash Bumrah.

“Look, bowling in the power play is always tough, but Jasprit is among the best in the world. With the new ball, we want wickets, and he gives us the best chance. If we can reduce teams to six or seven down before the death overs, the job becomes much easier,” Morne Morkel said.

The coach also highlighted how conditions and team balance shape their approach. With India relying heavily on spin after the powerplay, Morkel believes using Bumrah early maximizes his impact. “It’s no secret that spin comes into play after the sixth over. That’s why giving Jasprit a chance to strike up front is part of the plan,” he added.

Morne Morkel was clear that the “golden rule” in T20 cricket is taking wickets, and there’s no better bowler to do that than Bumrah.

“We know wickets change games. Using Bumrah in the powerplay gives us that edge. Of course, strategies may change depending on conditions, but right now, this feels like the best way forward,” he said.

Despite being rested for the Sri Lanka clash, Bumrah has already bagged five wickets in four matches, underlining his importance to India’s campaign. With the knockout stages approaching, how India continues to deploy their strike weapon will remain a key talking point.
