The question of whether India’s ageing superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature prominently in the team’s ODI setup has been a hot topic among cricket fans and experts. With Shubman Gill recently appointed as India’s new ODI captain, speculation about the future roles of Rohit and Kohli has intensified. Both legends have now retired from Tests and T20Is and have not played competitive cricket since the conclusion of IPL 2025. They are, however, set to return for the upcoming Australia ODI series later this month.

Addressing the media ahead of the second Test against West Indies in Delhi, Gill clarified that both Rohit and Kohli remain a part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Absolutely. The experience these two have and the matches they’ve won for India – very few match their record. Players of such skill, quality, and experience are very few in the world. On that front, we are definitely looking at them as part of our future plans,” Shubman Gill said.

Gill also shared insights into his own journey as the newly appointed ODI captain. He revealed that he was informed about his captaincy slightly before the official announcement, which came after India’s first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad.

“It’s an honour to lead India. I’m very excited to captain in the ODI format. The last few months have been exciting, but I am focused on the present. I don’t dwell on past achievements; I want to look forward and win everything in the upcoming months,” he added.

Speaking on his relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir, widely regarded as the architect of India’s ongoing transition, Gill highlighted the collaborative approach in shaping the team’s future.

“Our relationship is good. We have regular conversations about making players feel secure and preparing a strong pool of fast bowlers. The goal is to build a team that is competitive and ready for challenges ahead,” Shubman Gill said.
