At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Yashasvi Jaiswal appeared destined to etch his name once again in cricketing history with what looked like his third Test double century. However, Day 2 of the second Test between India and West Indies turned bittersweet as a heartbreaking mix-up with captain Shubman Gill ended Jaiswal’s stellar innings at 175.

The moment unfolded in just the second over of the morning session. Jaiswal, who was batting fluently, drove Jayden Seales wide of mid-off and instinctively called for a quick single. Gill, momentarily caught watching the ball, hesitated before responding. By the time he reacted, Jaiswal had already committed to the run and found himself stranded midway down the pitch.

The throw came in quickly at the keeper’s end, where Tevin Imlach collected the ball and dislodged the bails with Jaiswal short of his ground. Replays showed Imlach briefly lost control of the ball while whipping off the stumps, but crucially, he maintained contact long enough for the dismissal to stand. Umpire Richard Illingworth didn’t refer the decision upstairs — and Jaiswal’s brilliant innings came to a sudden end.

The 23-year-old looked visibly shattered. His dejected walk back to the pavilion said it all — a mix of disbelief and frustration. He had been in supreme form, dominating the West Indian attack with composure and precision, only to be undone by a moment of hesitation from his skipper.

The dismissal was particularly painful considering the context — Jaiswal had been in total command and was on the verge of yet another monumental knock. It was his first score between 100 and 200 at home, showcasing maturity and consistency beyond his years.

After the day’s play, India’s assistant coach Sitansu Kotak revealed that Jaiswal was keen to make amends for missing out in the first Test. “On the eve of this match, Jaiswal said he wanted to play a big innings. He approached it brilliantly,” Kotak shared.

At the time of his dismissal, India were 325/3, firmly in control but carrying the sting of what could have been. The mix-up may have denied Jaiswal a place beside India’s greats like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar, but his innings once again underscored why he’s considered one of the brightest young stars in world cricket.
