Former India U-19 World Cup-winning captain Prithvi Shaw began a new chapter in his domestic career as he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Maharashtra on Wednesday (October 15) against Kerala at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. However, Shaw’s much-anticipated debut didn’t go as planned.

The right-handed opener, who had once announced his arrival in red-ball cricket with a century (120) on his Ranji debut for Mumbai in 2017 against Tamil Nadu, was dismissed for a duck in his very first innings for Maharashtra. Shaw faced just four deliveries before being trapped LBW by MD Nidheesh on the fourth ball of the opening over.
It was a tough start for the young batter, who had switched teams after parting ways with Mumbai earlier this year. His dismissal triggered a collapse, as Maharashtra lost wickets in quick succession during the morning session. Coming in at No. 3, Siddhesh Veer suffered the same fate, falling for a golden duck to Nidheesh on the very next ball, caught behind by Kerala skipper Mohammed Azharuddeen.

Prithvi Shaw’s opening partner, Arshin Kulkarni, another promising India U-19 star, also perished without scoring — bowled by Nedumankuzhy Basil for a golden duck. By the time captain Ankit Bawne was dismissed by Basil in the fourth over, Maharashtra were reeling at 0/4, a nightmare start for their new campaign.

Despite the poor start, Shaw remains one of India’s most talented young batters. Across 58 first-class matches, he has amassed 4,456 runs at an impressive average of 46.02, with 13 centuries and 18 fifties to his name. Shaw famously scored a century on his Test debut for India against West Indies in 2018.

Having been dropped by Mumbai last season over fitness and discipline issues, Shaw’s move to Maharashtra is seen as an attempt to rebuild his domestic career. Just last week, he had scored a fluent century in a practice match against Mumbai, reigniting hopes of a strong comeback.
