Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has made a bold statement, declaring that there is no comparison between MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara, emphasising that India’s “Captain Cool” stood above everyone else as both a wicketkeeper and captain. Dhoni and Sangakkara, two modern greats who defined their era, shared one of cricket’s most iconic moments — the 2011 ICC World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

While both led from the front, it was Dhoni’s brilliance that carried India to a historic triumph. MS Dhoni’s unforgettable unbeaten 91 off 79 balls, capped by that legendary six to seal India’s victory, earned him the Player of the Match award and immortalised his leadership.

Reflecting on his experience of playing under Sangakkara for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers, Parthiv said Dhoni’s ability to stay calm, read the game, and inspire his team made him incomparable.

“There is no comparison. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was a far better wicketkeeper-captain than Sangakkara. I played with Sangakkara at the Deccan Chargers, and it’s not that he was bad — there’s no disrespect. But Dhoni, as a captain and wicketkeeper, was above everyone else,” Parthiv Patel said on The Great Indian Cricket Show.

Parthiv also weighed in on another hot topic — the best left-handed wicketkeeper-batter among Adam Gilchrist, Rishabh Pant, and Kumar Sangakkara. Without hesitation, he picked Gilchrist, calling him a “complete package” who dominated both white-ball and Test cricket with equal authority.

“Adam Gilchrist, without a doubt,” Parthiv Patel said. “Sangakkara had immense grace and class but didn’t keep wickets throughout his career. Pant is still a work-in-progress in white-ball cricket. But Gilchrist — he’s the complete package, both in Tests and ODIs.”

Parthiv’s remarks once again underline Dhoni’s unmatched legacy and Gilchrist’s enduring influence — two wicketkeeper-captains who revolutionised the game in their own distinct styles.
