According to the recent reports of Cricket Australia (CA), Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a back injury. Cummins had been bought by the Mumbai Indians (MI) for $A1.05 million but missed the tournament opener which was a nail-biting encounter but resulted in favor of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Cummins has “bone oedema in his vertebrae” – in other words, swelling in the joint, which is not the more serious stress fracture. Talking about his injury, CA’s Bupa Support Team Physiotherapist, David Beakley said: “Pat experienced some back soreness during the fourth Test in South Africa. Follow-up scans have confirmed that he has bone oedema in his vertebrae. It is important that Pat has time off bowling, to prevent the injury becoming more serious and consequently we have made the decision to rule Pat out of the IPL.”

He further added, “Pat will now undergo a period of recovery and rehabilitation and we will look to re-scan him in a few weeks to assess the healing. Following this, we will be in a better position to decide on Pat’s return to play timeline including participation in the limited overs tour of the UK.”

Since the tour to Indian last year, Pat has played as many as 13 consecutive Tests for Australia and he bowled a tally of 447.5 overs across all formats since the start of the last Australian summer. The grueling Test series in South Africa has resulted in a bunch of injuries for the players of both the sides. Cummins becomes the third seamer after Kagiso Rabada and Mitchell Starc to miss the IPL. Apart from the three pacers, South African captain Faf du Plessis is also recovering from a finger injury and a side strain and is set to miss CSK second game of the tournament after sitting out against MI on Saturday.

However, the Mumbai based franchise is yet to announce an apt replacement for him as they needed a bowler like Patespeciallyy after Jason Benhrendroff also getting rule before the start of the tournament.
