Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of India’s brightest young batting talents, finds himself on the sidelines during the ongoing ODI series against Australia. The left-handed Mumbai batter, who was benched in the first ODI, is likely to miss out again in the second match at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday (October 23). Despite his current non-involvement, a growing section of fans and former cricketers have urged the Indian team management to allow Jaiswal to showcase his potential on Australian soil.

Ahead of the second ODI, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak addressed the media in Adelaide, where he was asked about the chances of Jaiswal breaking into the playing XI. While Kotak didn’t rule out the youngster’s inclusion, he made it clear that Jaiswal will need to wait patiently for his turn.

“He’s in the squad, he’s practising well, and all youngsters know their time will come. But only eleven can play at a time — so you have to be ready when the chance arrives,” Sitanshu Kotak explained.

Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut on February 6, 2025, against England in Nagpur, is seen as a future pillar of India’s top order. However, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill currently opening the innings, the 22-year-old faces stiff competition.

Even though both Rohit and Gill failed to convert their starts in the first ODI, their consistency and stature — as the world’s No. 1 and No. 3 ODI batters respectively — make them almost undroppable at this stage.

Unless an injury sidelines one of the senior batters, Jaiswal may have to continue waiting for his opportunity. Interestingly, his ODI debut earlier this year came only because Virat Kohli was unavailable for selection. Once Kohli returned to the squad, Jaiswal was the one to make way. For now, the young southpaw’s focus remains on preparation, ensuring he’s ready when India calls on him next.
