Sarfaraz Khan’s journey in Indian cricket has hit another unexpected hurdle. Despite consistent domestic performances, the talented Mumbai batter has been left out of the India A squad for the upcoming red-ball series against South Africa A, raising fresh concerns about his place in the national setup. The 26-year-old last featured in a Test for India during the home series against New Zealand in November last year, and his exclusion has once again fueled discussions about the selectors’ approach.

Sarfaraz’s Test career began with immense promise. After dominating the Ranji Trophy for consecutive seasons, he finally received his maiden India call-up during the home series against England in early 2024. He immediately made an impression with twin half-centuries on debut, followed by a spectacular 150 against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

In his first six Tests, Sarfaraz accumulated 371 runs at an average of 37.10, showcasing both grit and flair. However, despite this solid start, he was benched for the Australia tour and has since slipped out of the Test radar.

Even a fighting 92-run knock for India A against England Lions earlier this year wasn’t enough to earn him a recall for the England tour. Now, being omitted from the South Africa A squad has led many to believe that the selectors currently do not see him in their immediate red-ball plans.

Amid growing uncertainty, Mumbai skipper Shardul Thakur has come forward in support of his teammate. Speaking to reporters, Thakur insisted that Sarfaraz doesn’t necessarily need an India A stint to make his way back into the national team. “If Sarfaraz keeps scoring runs in the Ranji Trophy, that’s enough to make the selectors notice him again,” Thakur said.

Shardul Thakur himself will look to impress with both bat and ball in the upcoming domestic season. After losing his Test spot post the England tour, the all-rounder is determined to make a strong case for his own comeback — alongside standing firmly behind Sarfaraz in his quest for redemption.
