Team India’s third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on October 25 witnessed a lighthearted moment when Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar collided while attempting to save a boundary. The comical yet painful-looking incident quickly went viral, adding a humorous twist to an otherwise competitive contest.

The incident occurred during the second ball of the 17th over of Australia’s innings, bowled by Kuldeep Yadav. Positioned at deep midwicket, Sundar sprinted towards the ball, while Rana charged in from deep backward square leg. In their eagerness to prevent a boundary, the two collided near the ropes, with the ball brushing Sundar’s body before crossing the line.

The moment drew laughter from teammates and fans alike, though a review from the TV umpire confirmed that the ball had indeed touched the rope, awarding four runs to Australia. Earlier, India captain Shubman Gill lost the toss for the third time in the series.

With the series already decided, India made two changes — bringing in Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna for Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy. The match was an opportunity for the younger players to showcase their potential and for India to avoid a clean sweep against a strong Australian outfit.

With the new ball, Harshit Rana partnered with Mohammed Siraj but failed to strike in his initial spell, conceding 21 runs in four overs. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer had earlier picked two wickets in the series at an economy rate of 6.69. Meanwhile, Washington Sundar continued to impress with the ball, dismissing Matthew Short for 30 with a sharp catch taken by Virat Kohli. Sundar’s consistency has been a key takeaway for India, as he now boasts four wickets in the series at an average just above 15.

Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel provided India with early breakthroughs, removing Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh respectively, putting Australia under early pressure. At the 23-over mark, the hosts stood at 124/3, with Matt Renshaw and Alex Carey steadying the innings.

For Australia, a win would seal their second consecutive home ODI series triumph over India since 2020/21. For Shubman Gill, however, it’s about breaking the streak — as the young skipper continues to chase his first ODI win since taking charge from Rohit Sharma.
